Calls grow for Irish Government to end State collaboration with gambling industry body – Near FM

On Thursday 9th November, on the same day the gambling industry-funded body the Gambling Awareness Trust / Gambling Care held their inaugural Irish Harmful Gambling Forum in Portlaoise – a letter signed by over 50 members of Irish community organisations and national and international public health and academic experts was handed in to the Dept. of the Taoiseach. The letter calls on Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Government and relevant Government Departments to take urgent action to mitigate the risks associated with the conflict of interests which, they say, have emerged as a result of certain activities of the gambling industry in Ireland.

Darren J. Prior popped along on the day and spoke to Paula Leonard, from the ICAAN Network; Prof. Mark Petticrew from the London School of Hygeine and Tropical Medicince who was in Dublin for the day and to Prof. Mark Philbin from DCU about their calls.
