CIES Bolivia: Realizing the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of At-Risk Adolescents

With less than 1,000 days left to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, MDG target 5b: to achieve Universal Access to Reproductive Health by 2015, remains the most off-track of all 8 development goals. Progress towards MDG 5b has been slow and uneven. However, in Bolivia, one of the poorest and least developed countries in Latin America, indicators relating to reproductive health are starting to improve.

The documentary explores this positive trend by zooming in on Bolivian initiative Centro de Investigacion, Educacion y Servicios, also known as CIES. At the start of 2011, Irish Aid committed three year funding for CIES to carry out the Most At-Risk Adolescents programme, which provides sexual and reproductive health services to marginalized youth living and working on the streets.

Listening to the voices of the highly trained professionals and vulnerable young people at the heart of CIES’ innovative service delivery approach, we can begin to understand why access to reproductive health is crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty, particularly for young people and adolescents.

Production of this documentary was supported by the Simon Cumbers Media Fund.
