Return to the Pine Trees – 2.The Ghosts of Christmas Past

Return to the Pine Trees

Return to the Pine Trees is a selection of 6 short stories about growing up in the North Dublin areas of Turnapin Lane, Clonshaugh, Coolock Lane and Santry in the late 1960s and early 1970s by Dublin born Gerry Cooley.

These stories capture a happy, innocent childhood  and they bring to life a time in these areas on the outskirts of Dublin City before they all changed forever.

This series is a follow on to 2011′s Turn at the Pine Trees and the stories are taken from the book of the same name available in all Northside book stores and to rent from your local library.

2.The Ghosts of Christmas Past

Very Dublin story rural or urban this one. Gerry talks about his experiences around Christmas time. This was the most difficult one for him to revisit and bring to Radio as his mother May, who is the central character, passed away early in 2012. An 11 year old Gerry brings us into O’Connell Street for the Christmas “Safari” in the company of his Mother and five siblings. The Christmas “Rig-out” was the goal, with all the atmosphere of a bustling Dublin in the background. The Dublin Airport brass band provide the music.

This series is made with the support of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Sound and Vision scheme.
