Dublin’s Hidden Histories returns for second series in partnership with Trinity Long Room Hub and Unit18. Recorded in front of a live audience, and featuring songs sung by An Goilin Traditional singers, the series will bring to light histories of Dublin that have been lost or forgotten.
In this episode, Dublin’s Medieval boom, Dr Sparky Booker, Assistant Professor in Medieval Irish History at TCD, speaks about the Irish population of the city in the later middle ages. Dublin was a colonial capital and seat of the colonial administration, right at the centre of the Pale, but it was also home to a great many Irish men and women, living and working alongside their English neighbours. Dr Booker and Near FM presenter, Ciarán Murray will discuss how those Irish people (a growing population in the later middle-ages) navigated discriminatory laws against them and were able to play a major role in the city’s society and economy. Songs are provided by Michael Steen and Frank Nugent of An Goilin Traditional singers.
The episode is presented by Ciaran Murray. Produced by Jaye Palmer. Sound design by Paul Loughran. Recorded by Gay Graham and Gabor Zajzon. Production support from Bill Bergin.
