Deirdre Kinahan is an award winning playwright. Her latest play Rathmines Road is currently on at the Abbey Theatre. She caught up with Norma Burke on The Arts Show to chat about it.

Set over one evening, Rathmines Road is a play that rages in a tiny room.

Fraught, funny and ferocious, this new drama by Deirdre Kinahan challenges the cultural response to accusations of sexual assault.

Following a hugely successful run of Spinning in the 2014 Dublin Theatre Festival, Fishamble is delighted to present Deirdre’s latest powerful and questioning drama. Bristling with tension, Rathmines Road unleashes a brutal truth that affects us all. It is a play that asks: when and how do we take responsibility?

Fishamble is an Olivier Award-winning, internationally acclaimed Irish theatre company, dedicated to the discovery, development and production of new work. In 2018 Fishamble celebrates 30 years of new plays in Ireland through its many productions and extensive development programme.

More about Deirdre Kinahan…

Deirdre Kinahan is actively involved in the Irish Theatre Sector both as Playwright and Producer. Deirdre is Literary Associate with Meath Councy Council Arts Office, has served as board member for the Abbey Theatre and Theatre Forum Ireland and is an adviser to the Stewart Parkert Trust. Her work is translated into many languages and produced regularly both in Ireland and on the International stage.

Her plays include: Wild Sky, Spinning, Halcyon Days , Bogboy , Moment, Hue & Cry, Melody, Maisy Daly’s Rainbow. For Radio: Bogboy (RTE), A Bag on Ballyfinch Place (BBC) and most recently Unmanageable Sisters, an adaptation of Michael Tremblay’s Les Belles Soeurs for the Abbey Theatre, Dublin.

Deirdre is currently under commission to Manhattan Theatre Club (New York), Fishamble Theatre Company (Ireland), The Old Vic Theatre (London), Solas Nua Theatre Company Washington DC, Pentabus Theatre Company UK, Meath County Council (Ireland) and has numerous other theatre, film and writing projects in development.

Her work has won many awards most notably a Fringe First for Halcyon Days in 2013 and the Tony Doyle Bursary with BBC Northern Ireland 2009. She is the recipient of the Jim McNaughton Tilestyle Artist Bursary 2013, A Pegggy Ramsay Award 2014 and Arts Council of Ireland Commission Award 2015 and 2017.
