The Arts Show: Nathalie Weadick of the Irish Architecture Foundation on Open House Dublin 2018

Ahead of Open House Dublin this weekend 12-14th October, Nathalie Weadick, Director of the Irish Architecture Foundation joined Norma Burke on the Arts Show for a fascinating insight into the festival and to talk about some of the highlights as well as the incredibly important role architecture & inclusivity have in society. They also looked at how the festival addresses topics of importance in the future of Dublin – historic buildings, height and good design.

This weekend, Open House Dublin, Ireland’s largest architecture festival, is expected to attract over 30,000 visits to buildings across the city. All tours and events are completely free to attend.

Organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation, Open House Dublin is now in its thirteenth year. Buildings across the city open their doors to the public with tours provided by expert guides, showcasing outstanding architecture for everyone to experience.

This year the programme includes 110 building tours and 61 other events taking place on land and on water! For the first time, the programme features a building for every decade from 1700 up to present day, creating a living timeline of Dublin’s architecture and the lives of its citizens over the last three centuries.

Buildings new to Open House Dublin this year include the Four Courts, Kevin Street Garda Station, the new Royal College of Surgeons building, Bewley’s Grafton Street, George’s Place social housing, Henrietta Street tenement museum and a number of private homes around the city. Returning favourites include the Custom House, Pigeon House Power Station, the French Ambassador’s residence, Twitter HQ and Grand Canal Marina houseboats.

Open House Dublin is a festival for all the family. Open House Junior events are particularly tailored to children and families, including special workshops and self-guided ‘architreks’ and ‘parkitreks’ around some of Dublin’s neighbourhoods and parks.

62 Eden Villas, a private home in Glasthule on Sunday 14 October, 12-5pm
Structural Force, an exhibition by artist Siobhan O’Connor at the Oonagh King Gallery, on Saturday 13 October, 12-5pm.
