Culture Shots #3

Culture Shots # 3 (Intercultural Dialogue through Community Media) by Near Fm on Mixcloud

This is the third show of Culture Shots, part of a series of 13 programmes examining the meaning of culture and promoting intercultural understanding.

Tonight’s programme asks whether everything ‘cultural’ is acceptable by confronting the harmful cultural practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), internationally recognized as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.

Anne Healy interviews Salome Mbugua of Akidwa to learn more about why FGM is perpetuated, and about Akidwa’s efforts to bring an end to this practice. Tina Dio gives a dramatic reading of “Nina’s Story” excerpted from Herstory: Migration Stories of African Women in Ireland, in which a woman at-risk recounts learning about FGM from an awareness-raising radio programme. Also featuring music by Nina Simone.

This series is a part of the Intercultural Dialogue through Community Media project, which is co-financed by the European Commission under the European Integration Fund and is supported by the Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration in the Department of Justice and Equality and Pobal.
