Caitriona Redmond of Balbriggan Allotments Association talks to Noel McGuinness on Northside2Day about the association’s Open Day on 20th October where you can sign up for an allotment.  She outlines the benefits of growing your own seasonal food and says that allotment holders are a sociable bunch, willing to help other holders, pass on tips and teach skills.  The Balbriggan Allotments scheme also offers a communal pig-rearing project where volunteers will share responsibility for feeding and maintaining the animals, which when fully grown will be sent for slaughter, with participating allotment holders availing of the meat.  Bee-keeping will also be available at the scheme and this will assist in making the allotments into a sustainable environment.
