Kilbarrack Family Fun Day 2023

Near FM presenters Debbie McMahon and George Mulcahy, with crew, went down to the Kilbarrack Family Fun Day and meet a diverse bunch of people from the community as they celebrate their annual family fun day. We hear from representatives from Kilbarrack Coast Community Project (KCCP), ReachOut, Women’s Recovery Group and some very enthusiastic young football fans. All sound tracked by some great 80’s music.

Interview 1 – Marian Clarke, has worked as the Community Programme coordinator with KCCP for over twenty years. She is the main organiser of the family fun day every year.

Interview 2 –Fred – used to drive a taxi  got involved with KCCP during covid on a Community Employment scheme and is very happy there so he wants to give something back and is doing a sky dive to raise money for KCCP in September 2023.

Interview 3 –Psychotherapist and filmmaker, Tiernan Williams manager of the Reachout project with KCCP, he talks to Debbie about how he helps the teenagers in the community by way of getting them involved in film making

Interview 4 – Sinead Jordan, Women’s Recovery Group. The Women”s Recovery group is the brainchild of Sinead Jordan. They meet every Friday night for an hour and a half for a chat and to plan events such as group trips to various parts of Dublin and beyond. The Women’s Recovery Group offers those who take part an opportunity to meet others who are on the same journey as themselves and provides support to those who need them.

Interview 5 – Lisa Dowling, Youth Project Worker. Lisa spoke to George about the challenges of being a key youth worker in Kilbarrack. Lisa spoke candidly about the misrepresentation of young people from the area in mainstream media and voiced her frustrations at the lack of funding to help establish a viable youth facility in the area despite these facilities being available elsewhere.

Interview 6 & 7 – George spoke to young people about the school they attend as well as their favourite subjects and teachers. They spoke about what it’s like for young people growing up in Kilbarrack as well as their love for playing football and cycling.
