Maura Walsh chats to Director, Rory Hughes and Actor, Amy Penston (aka Maureen) ahead of the musical RENT which runs from October 23rd to 27th at Liberty Hall Theatre, Dublin
Set in the late 80’s/early 90’s in NYC, RENT includes themes such as poverty, homelessness, gay life, drag queens, punk with many issues still relevant to today. Jonathan Larson’s multi award winning, world-wide hit RENT is loosely based on Puccini’s Opera, La Boheme. It spent 12 years on Broadway with many of the original cast going on to develop international stardom.
I chatted to Rory about it’s creator’s untimely death on the eve of it’s premier, the Irish production and his own journey from Pittsburgh to Dublin with Hues Productions and his mission to bring Broadway to Ireland.
