Susan Cahill chats to Norma Burke ahead of her talk Bold Girls: A History of Wild Irish Girls at Trinity College

Susan Cahill is an Associate Professor in the School of Irish Studies, Concordia University, Montréal. Originally from Clonakilty, Co. Cork, her research interests include Irish girls’ literary cultures, children’s and YA fiction, and contemporary Irish literature, particularly women’s writing. She is currently a Visiting Research Fellow in the Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London.

In her talk ‘Bold Girls: A Literary History of Wild Irish Girls’, she will look at the extraordinary volume of novels published around the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century that feature wild Irish girls: girls who disrupt schools, who become artists, who open factories, and who even engage in revolutionary activity. These girls will be considered alongside more recent YA fiction, novels which highlight the ‘bold girl’ in all her complexity.
