SS Adela and SS Hare Commemoration Events

Hilary Wallner of the Adela-Hare Centenary Commemoration Committee talks to Noel McGuinness about events that will take place to commemorate the centenary of the sinking of the SS Adela and the SS Hare. The two merchant ships were torpedoed by German U-boats in the Irish Sea during the 1st World War. A commemorative plaque for the SS Hare will be unveiled on Custom House Quay at 1.00pm on Saturday 30th September 2017. After this, a second commemorative plaque will be unveiled for the SS Adela at the Campshire Buildings close to the ship’s original berth on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay.

In addition, a talk at Ringsend Library at 6.30pm on 4th October will explore the impact of unrestricted submarine warfare during the First World War on the life of Dublin Port and uncover the human impact the sinking of these ships had on the dockland families of the lost crew members. The talk is part of the Dublin Festival of History. Admission is free. Booking required phone Ringsend Library 01 6680063.
