Dr. Úna Fitzpatrick, Ecologist at the National Biodiversity Data Centre, talks to Noel McGuinness about the importance of bees as pollinators. Pollinators are essential for producing many of the fruits and vegetables we need for a healthy diet. They are also necessary for a healthy environment and landscape. Without them, the 78% of wild plants in Ireland that require insect pollination would disappear. Guidelines have been launched with practical actions that businesses can take in both indoor and outdoor spaces. These include actions that everyone can take such as installing a bee or insect hotel, planting pollinator friendly bulbs, trees, shrubs and flower beds, and reducing the use of pesticides.
