As our population ages it is timely to reflect on the nature and roles of older people in Irish society. Ageing, or growing old, is a biological fact but should we consign
the older person to the economic dustbin, as someone who can no longer make a contribution to Irish society?
Ageism is the perception that to be old is to be inactive or to be useless to society. Older people are sometimes viewed, by and large, as a burden which must be borne by the younger, more energetic and ‘productive’ members of society.
This programme explores this perception with guest Paul Maher from Agewise, and participants in the Intergenerational Project conducted by the Older Women’s Network.
