Lifesaving and Water Safety

Karl Smith is a volunteer who is very much involved with Irish Water Safety.  He talks to Noel McGuinness about the recent National Championships where teams from aroundIreland had an action-packed day at the University of Limerick’s 50 metre pool complex.  Karl explains that this annual competition gives those involved in lifesaving an opportunity to compete in conditions that they can also encounter in real-life rescues.  Like Karl, many children, teenagers and adults have come to the sport of lifesaving through Irish Water Safety’s classes.  This is a unique sport as it is fun to be involved in but it also gives back a valuable lifesaving skill to the community.

In addition to describing the fun of the action-packed championships, Karl also gives a reminder from Irish Water Safety about how to keep safe in flooded areas.  For advice on water safety and details of classes see www.iws.ie.
