Simon Cumbers Media Fund Student Scheme 2013/2014 with Minister for Trade & Development Joe Costello T.D

Speaking about the 2013/14 student scheme, Minister Costello said;
Some of Irelands Top Journalists will deliver a special workshop to students wishing to gain hands-on media experience
As well as highlighting the media competition Minister Costellos aim is to promote a greater understanding of global development among Third-Level students.The Minister discusses the opportunity that will provide funding for three students to travel to a developing country next year 2014.

The winning students will be funded to travel to a developing country to research and produce a media project focusing on development issues. As part of their prize, they will receive guidance and one-to-one mentoring from journalists within three of Ireland’s leading media organisations: The Irish Times’ Foreign Policy Editor, Paddy Smyth; Newstalk Producer Susan Cahill and Storyful.com’s Managing Editor, Markham Nolan. Each of these publications, along with TheJournal.ie will publish the winners’ report.

Minister Costello added,“I hope that many students in third level institutions throughout the country will take up the opportunity which this competition offers. I look forward to the reports, and hope the experience inspires further interest and reporting on these important issues.”

Students from colleges around Dublin with an interest in journalism, media or development issues are invited to attend a special workshop for prospective applicants to the 2013/14 Simon Cumbers Media Fund Student Scheme at , at the Irish Aid Centre, 27-31 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1.

The workshop will be delivered by top journalists from three of the Fund’s media partners:
Foreign Editor at The Irish Times, Paddy Smyth;
Newstalk Producer, Susan Cahill; and Managing Editor of Storyful.com, Markham Nolan.

Representatives from Irish Aid will also be on hand to provide details of the 2013/14 Student Scheme, including the themes and guidelines that must be observed by applicants.
