Babel \u00c1tha Cliath is a three part series funded by the
\nBroadcasting Authority of Ireland<\/p>\n
Airing on Wednesday August 14th, 21st and 28th at 6pm.<\/p>\n
Dublin has been a city with a multilingual population for many years,
\nmedieval Dublin was already a city where several languages coexisted, the
\nVikings spoke Old Norse, Latin would have been present (monks) and also
\nIrish, Norman and Anglo-Saxon (Old English) were spoken. But it has not been
\nuntil the 1990\u0092s, when Ireland became a net receiver of immigration, that
\nIreland\u0092s capital city became a true multilingual metropolis with a huge
\nnumber of languages from all over the world spoken in Dublin every day.<\/p>\n
In this new 3 part series, Babel Atha Cliath, wi\u0092ll touch on the history and
\nremnants of the older languages that were once spoken in Dublin, such as
\nFingalian, Norman French, Cant, middle English, Leinster Irish and this
\nexamination will place emphasis on the way we use English today and the
\npreservation of local accents, sayings and the idiosyncracies of \u0093Northside
\nDublinese\u0094. We will also meet native speakers of Spanish, Mandarin, Polish,
\nArabic, German, Lugandan & Irish.<\/p>\n
