The event is commonly known as The Flight of the Earls and those who took part in the flight became known as the \u201cNoble Ninety-Nine.\u201d According to McCavitt in The Flight of the Earls, this event began the \u201clost leader syndrome\u201d in Irish history. Two hundred and forty years later, another \u2018lost leader\u2019 would die in Geneva on his way to Rome, the final address of O\u2019Neill and O\u2019Donnell.
