Se\u00e1n Moynihan, CEO of ALONE, will discuss the importance of linking health
\nand community services to best support those in need. \u201cWe are delighted to
\npartner with the Irish Gerontological Society to present this symposium next

The announcement of the symposium comes following the recording of the
\nhighest ever number of patients waiting on trolleys in an Irish hospital in
\nUniversity Hospital Limerick last week. \u201cHospital overcrowding is one such
\nchallenge we consistently face in supporting people to live well in their
\ncommunity. Events like this symposium give us the opportunity to broaden the
\ndiscussion and find innovative solutions for issues like these,\u201d Moynihan
\ncontinued.<\/p>\n
\u201cALONE has been working on the frontline of community-led care for 40 years
\nand we know just how important it is to open dialogue and explore how
\ncommunity groups, organisations, healthcare professionals, and government
\nbodies can learn from each other and work together to support our country\u2019s
\nageing population.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr Diarmuid O\u2019Shea, Irish Gerontological Society President, said, \u201cALONE\u2019s
\npartnership on this event and the engagement from participating speakers
\nhave been instrumental for providing an<\/p>\n
informed and rounded discussion on all aspects pertaining to older people.
\nWe\u2019re looking forward to a stimulating day in St Vincent\u2019s Hospital next
\nmonth and to welcoming a multi-disciplinary audience to discuss and engage
\nwith these important issues.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHaving age attuned pathways, both in our communities and hospitals will
\nmean that if ill health, chronic illness, frailty or dementia affects an
\nolder person there are appropriate services in place to help them and their
\nfamilies. Addressing the challenge of delayed discharges from hospitals is
\none significant part of this challenge \u2013 those who end up staying in
\nhospital longer than is good for them.The IGS will launch a position paper
\non this issue at the symposium.\u201d<\/p>\n
The importance of being able to age at home was highlighted by Kay Maddill,
\nALONE tenant, \u201cI think home is your front door, home is your safety. Home is
\nto have control over who comes and who doesn\u2019t come.\u201d<\/p>\n
