\nEpilepsy, what to do if a seizure occurs and
\nsome of the myths about Epilepsy.<\/p>\n
Epilepsy is the tendency to have recurring seizures. It can affect people of all ages, but is
\nmore prevalent in children, adolescents and the elderly. It is also more common in people
\nwith an intellectual disability. It is a treatable condition and the majority of people can
\nbecome seizure-free thanks to medications or in some cases through surgical intervention.
\nHowever, for about one in three people, existing treatments do not control the seizures and
\nfor this group in particular, epilepsy can be particularly debilitating, affecting the person\u2019s
\neducation, employment, psychological & social functioning, self-esteem and independent
\nliving.<\/p>\n
If a seizure occurs, you\u00a0should\u00a0do the following:
\n\uf0b7 Stay calm and time the seizure
\n\uf0b7 Protect\/cushion the head
\n\uf0b7 If possible turn the person on their side
\n\uf0b7 Don\u2019t restrain the person – unless they are in danger.
\n\uf0b7 Let the seizure run its course
\n\uf0b7 Do not put anything in the mouth (you can wipe away saliva)<\/p>\n
