Programme 2<\/strong> of\u00a0 From Byway to Highway<\/em> takes us another 2 decades along as we make our way\u00a0down the Hole-in-the-Wall Road. This week we meet Alice and Ollie Hand who share with us their thoughts on the past, the present and the future. We are also joined by Historian and Author of \u201cGreen Fields Gone Forever\u201d Douglas Appleyard and we see what life had to offer those who lived in the big houses dating from the 17 hundreds on the road. While research and data from the 1901 and 1911 census shows a huge chasm in the lived realities between the rich and poor who lived side by side in the area.\u00a0 Join us on our\u00a0journey through time along the road.<\/p>\n

About the series<\/strong><\/p>\n

From<\/em>\u00a0Byway to Highway<\/em>\u00a0is a 4 part historical radio documentary series focusing on the lives of people living in the area of the\u00a0Hole in the Wall Road<\/em>, North East Dublin.<\/p>\n

Once a quiet back road that linked Raheny with Portmarnock, the Hole in the Wall Road has become an urban hub for much of the traffic accessing the vast new development of Dublin\u2019s Northern Fringe. The stories of the residents young and old of this small community are a living archive.<\/p>\n

The listener is transported from green fields to duplexes and apartments from steam engines and wheat thrashers to Dart trains and Bus Lanes. But most importantly these stories serve as a timely and poignant reminder of how far Irish society has come and of times long gone but (as of yet) not forgotten as we are transported through a century and into a new millennium.<\/p>\n

From Byway to Highway<\/em>\u00a0is supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland through the television licence fee, is produced by Enda M. Roche and is a Pearlman Media Production for Near FM.<\/strong><\/p>\n
