He spoke about the current consultation\u00a0with regard to the Aarhus Convention.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland ratified the UNECE Convention on Access to\u00a0Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental\u00a0Matters, commonly referred to as the Aarhus Convention, on 20th June 2012. He pointed out\u00a0that Phil Hogan, the former minister for the environment had inserted a clause in the official\u00a0document providing for GMOs which had been ratified by the government.<\/p>\n<p>He offered to\u00a0coordinate consultation submissions from organisations who wished him to do so and he\u00a0could be contacted at Brendan Kelly Facebook. He pointed out that there is also a public\u00a0consultation process with regard to the formation of the\u2019 River Basin Management Plan\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Navan pointed out that in the case of Bolivia efforts were made to charge people for\u00a0water and the government under Evo Morales abandoned it and the Company which had been\u00a0installing the system had taken the Bolivian government to court on the basis of financial\u00a0losses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PART TWO:<\/strong> Robert Navan give a report on his recent visit to Southern France\u00a0during the summer months and how it is being affected by climate change with\u00a0extreme flooding and drought\u00a0due to\u00a0threats to the environment from major industry.\u00a0He expressed surprise that none of this is being reported in our media despite the fact\u00a0that a lot of lives are being lost thereby.<\/p>\n<p>There was a discussion about the international trade agreements, with regard to which\u00a0Senator Alice-Mary Higgins succeeded in getting a motion opposing\u00a0provisional application of the controversial trade agreement CETA passed in\u00a0the Seanad.<\/p>\n<p>Reference was made to Mary Robinson former president of Ireland\u2019s interview on\u00a0the advantages of vegan diet in relation to global warming, when she spoke at the\u00a0One Young World Summit in Ottawa, Canada recently. (Ref: Irish Daily Mail report\u00a01\/10\/16).<\/p>\n<p>On the same subject, reference was made to the film \u2018Cowspiracy: The\u00a0Sustainability Secret\u2019 a groundbreaking feature-length environmental\u00a0documentary following intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the\u00a0most destructive industry facing the planet today and the farming industry. He\u00a0investigates why he maintains the world\u2019s leading environmental are too afraid\u00a0to talk about it. Reference was made to the publications \u2018Animal Liberation\u00a0by Peter Singer (Bodley Head) and \u2018Sapiens\u2019 by Yuval Noah Harare\u00a0(Vintage). Various views were expressed in the discussion which ensued.<\/p>\n<p>It was also noted that Sunday the 9th October was John Lennon\u2019s birthday. Born\u00a0in 1940, he had been a champion for peace. Columbus Day is celebrated in the\u00a0US.
