JayeA fun-filled two-hour programme recorded at the Kilbarrack Coast Community Programme’s annual Family Fun Day. Presenters Myra Gleeson and Emma Farrell meet the organisers, participants, community groups and local families who came together to celebrate everything KCCP/Youth Matters brings to the Kilbarrack community.
The programme explores KCCP’s wide range of youth, family support, rehabilitation, counselling and community services, while also highlighting the organisation’s campaign for a new, purpose-built community centre. Alongside the interviews, we hear from some of the children and young people enjoying the sunshine, activities, animals and music at the Family Fun Day. Myra Gleeson interviews Lisa Dowling, Youth Worker with KCCP, who discusses the history of the organisation, its prevention and family-support work and the urgent need for improved community facilities. She also speaks with Tiernan Williams, KCCP Coordinator, and David Gorman, Community Employment Supervisor, about rehabilitation, personal development, recovery and helping young people discover purpose, structure and opportunities.
Myra also meets Emma Finn, local beekeeper at Bees On The Roof who talks about discovering beekeeping, learning through the Fingal North Dublin Beekeepers Association and the importance of bees and local biodiversity. Young KCCP service users Theo and Fabian discuss sport, school and growing up in the area, while Jackson and Kayden share their enthusiasm for football, mountain biking, motocross and Formula One.
In the second hour, Emma Farrell interviews Helen Moynihan, Dublin Regional Organiser with CATU, the Community Action Tenants Union, about tenants’ rights, public housing and CATU’s campaign against Dublin City Council rent increases.
Emma also speaks with Callum Murtagh, a participant in KCCP’s personal development programme, about the physical and mental-health workshops offered by the programme and the support and encouragement participants receive from KCCP staff.
Simeon Smith, founding member of the MaSamba Samba School discusses the charity’s work, the energy of samba music and the importance of inclusive community events. Emma also hears from Danielle Long and Fiona Smart about their families’ experiences of KCCP, the support it provides across generations and the need for greater investment in community services and men’s mental-health supports.
Young visitors Robin and Bea, Erin and Quinn also join Emma to share their highlights from the day, including the water activities, playground and animal-petting area.
